Night train network 2030

Berlin’s Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action is inviting interested stakeholders to an online conference on night train connections between Berlin and European metropolises. The event will take place on Zoom on 4 February 2022.

Despite various efforts to make European long-distance connections more attractive, operators have suspended numerous night train services over the past decade. As climate- friendly alternative to air travel attractive night train connections has attracted strong support by transport policy makers and rail users alike. Furthermore, the Senate of Berlin is committed to improve night train connections between Berlin and European metropolises.

First practical successes directly benefiting Berlin can already be seen with the initiative of future-oriented market players, such as the planned reintroduction of the Prague- Amsterdam- Brussels night train as well as the direct links to Zurich, Vienna, Graz and Budapest via the ÖBB Nightjet network.

Against this background and developments, the Senate of Berlin has also intensively discussed this topic in recent months. The focus was to identify possibilities how Berlin could be established as a hub for international night train connections, via which routes Berlin could be integrated into a sustainable European night train network and what measures and implementation framework are required to achieve this vision.

During the online conference, the status of related studies and the latest developments from a market and customer perspective will be discussed with participants.
